SINTANG – There are 24 thousand lowland tea seedlings planted in polybags. The tea seeds developed by the Regent of Sintang, Jarot Winarno in collaboration with Solidaridad, were taken from Bandung. Currently, the age of tea being developed at Demoplot is 2 months old. “The tea seeds are from Bandung. It’s two months old,” Pinus said. Pinus is trusted by Jarot to take care of the coffee and tea plantations at the coffee house on Jalan Kelam, Kelam Permai District.
Apart from lowland tea, Pinus also takes care of coffee plantations. Currently the coffee has started to bear fruit. When the tea is four months old, it will be transferred from the polybag to the soil that Jarot has prepared. One hectare, for 10 thousand tea seedlings. “One hectare is 10 thousand, the planting is rather dense. While our total seeds is 224 thousand seeds,” said Pinus.
This is the first time for Pinus to manage tea and coffee nursery. For him, planting these two commodities are new experiences. Previously, he was a farmer in Dedai District, but he only planted rubber and oil palm. “Never before, this is a new experience,” he said. The weather factor is important to note for these two commodity crops. Moreover, the climate in Kalimantan is much different from that in Java. “Coffee and tea, a bit fussy taking care of it. The most difficult thing is the heat factor, the coffee must have a protector.” “But it all depends on the maintenance, if maintenance is routine then the result will be good, in agriculture, we need need to try everything,” said Pinus.
Maintaining lowland tea is no different. Within a day, Pinus has to water four times. Fertilizer is also needed. So that the tea is fertile. “Not difficult, depends on the maintenance. Hopefully it will be successful and Sintang Regency will have authentic tea,” he hoped.
