LONDON – One of the British tea producers, Finlays, Ottilie Cunningham admits that tea from Indonesia is very natural and of high quality compared to tea from other countries. This was revealed during a business luncheon with around 20 British tea entrepreneurs held at the Indonesian Embassy in London, Tuesday afternoon (12/11/2013).

According to Cunningham, his company has been buying tea from Indonesia for the last 10 years, which is then processed for sale to British consumers.

On that occasion, Chairman of the Indonesian Tea Council, Rachmat Badrudin, said Indonesia has the potential to develop a tea business and is ready to work with the UK and other countries to partner with Indonesian tea smallholders.

“We will continue to strive to increase cooperation in developing the productivity and quality of Indonesian tea leaves, especially those belonging to smallholders. Cooperation can start with England, then with other European countries,” he said.

Rachmat, who is also the owner of KBP Chakra, revealed that global tea production and trade reached 4,624,625 tons, with exports of 1,770,652 and imports reaching 1,621,600 tons, while tea plantations in Indonesia amounted to only 95,000 hectares and 77% were in West Java. (antara/yus)
